Freiburg - Gateway to the Black Forrest

When you want to visit the Black Forest area during your Germany vacation, Freiburg is the perfect spot. The town has the charming attitude of a modern university community but also offers historical and scenic highlights.

Because the area around Freiburg offers many highlights the town is also known as “Gateway to the Black Forest”. A few places worth watching around Freiburg is the vantage point of Schauinsland peak, the historical town of Breisach or Germany’s largest theme park called Europa Park. As you see, Freiburg offers something for anyone.

The town itself is rather small with about 220,000 inhabitants. Most of the sights are located in the picturesque Old Town so you can visit all the lovely places conveniently by foot or with the metro.  The town’s landmarks are the great Minster Cathedral and the so called “Bächle”, which is a small canal in the streets of the Old Town. Once used for water supply and to slack fires it is today a famous attraction. But beware: Legend relates that if you accidentally step in the “Bächle” you will marry a man or woman from Freiburg.

In terms of providing sustenance, Freiburg has a lot to offer. Many cafes and restaurants around the Old Town invite to relax and enjoy a typical meal from the Baden area. The cuisine is hefty and delicious. A good spot for a proper dinner is the restaurant Feierling. They not only serve some great food, they also have their own little brewery making the best beer in Freiburg.
