English Garden in Munich

English Garden - This is for the inhabitants of Munich what the Central Park is for the New Yorker - A place to relax, go in for sports, hang out and forget the drab monotony of everyday life. With a size of 373 hectare, the Englisch Garden of Munich is the biggest inner city park of the world. In comparison, the Central Park in New York City has a size of 343 hectare. The English Garden offers free time activities of all kinds. In summer you might want to take a long walk or a bike tour. You can also take a boat and relax on one of the little lakes. If you get thirsty, many beer gardens throughout the park invite for refreshments and snacks.

Also in winter there is plenty to do in the English Garden. A walk through the snow-covered scenery can be very romantic. You can also do ice skating on some of the lakes. From some places, you have great views over the whole town. No matter what time you are in Munich, the English Garden invites you to relax from your tiring sightseeing tours and should not be missed.

Actually, the development of the English Garden was advanced by an American physicist. Sir Benjamin Thompson, also known as Count Rumford, moved to Munich in 1785 where he became the personal assistant of the Bavarian ruler. He was also the senior military officer and so he claimed recreation areas for his soldiers.

The garden was planned and arranged by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, a famous lansdcape gardener. Sckell received his training in the Court Market Garden of Schwetzingen. Soon after completion, the English Garden also opened for the public.
