German Wines – A Great Comeback. Wine out of Germany didn’t really had the best reputation throughout the last century. Moreover, it was an insider’s tip. In the beginning of the 21st century, the German wine industry started a big marketing campaign helping German wine to a comeback. Today, the verdict of the public is a different one. German white wines like Riesling always had a good standing compared to international standards. But now, also red wines like Dornfelder and Pinot Noir arouse the interest of wine experts, who realized the richness of varieties the German wine-growers offer.

One quality of German wines is the long maturing time. Because of the mild climate in Germany, the grapes mature longer than in countries south of Germany like France, Spain and Portugal. The more the grapes are maturing; the better is the cultivation of the flavour. Thanks to the long maturing period, German wines are of great quality. Also ongoing improvements in the cultivation process help to enhance the wine quality. That happens in a sound way as the use of chemicals is regulated by law.

The wine-growing in German has a proud history of over 2000 years. After the triumph of the Cesar of Rome over the Gaul, the cultivation of wine was brought to the German tribes. First wine-growing districts developed along Danube and Rhine. In the middle ages the emperor Charlemagne promoted the wine cultivation systematically with legislations. The cultivation of wine had to cope with a lot of setbacks like the Thirty Year’s War, two World Wars and vine pest. But what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and so did German wine.

Today, the wine growing areas in Germany comprise about 100,000 hectare. Typically German, the quality of the wine is inspected by office. The wine growing conditions are determined strictly to guarantee products of high quality. When you travel through Germany, you should try the local wines to explore the great variety of tasty German wines.
