Public Transportation in Germany

Inter City Express Train

The public transportation system of Germany is very efficient and highly developed. With a top speed of 180 mph the Inter City Express (ICE) trains bring you fast and safe to many destinations. Unlike the US or Canada, you can really get anywhere by train, bus or subway.

For many travellers, the train is the first choice of transportation. If you plan to do so as well, make sure to get a ticket beforehand. There are special deals for foreigners and you will also save a lot of time because you do not have to get a new ticket all the time. This assures a relaxing way to travel during your Germany vacation. Tickets can be bought by your travel agent or you order them directly via eurorailways.com online.

The stations are often located convenient in the centres of the cities. Cabs can be found anywhere near train or bus stations. They are much more expensive than the public alternatives, especially in big cities and on the weekends. From my experience most German cab drivers are often morose and do not speak english at all so you might want to take a bus instead. Unlike the cab drivers, esspecially young Germans speak English well and will gladly help tourists finding the right bus or train.

The alternative for public transportation during your vacation is renting a car. However, this is very expensive in Germany. Unlike the US, most cars you get in Germany have manual mode. If you are not used to drive a manual mode car, I would not recommend to learn it in a foreign country. However, if you are interested in driving your car very fast, you will love the no speed limited motorways in Germany.
